Large mammoth molar from the North Sea – 4.9 kg – 22 cm
An exceptionally large and impressive fossil molar of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), originating from the North Sea.
Weighing an impressive 4.9 kilograms, this is a substantial fossil. The numerous, densely packed lamellae are beautifully visible and demonstrate the remarkable structure of a mammoth molar. These plates of enamel and dentine together formed a powerful grinding surface, adapted for processing the tough grasses of the ice age steppe.
The fossil features a distinct natural patina. The brown, gray, and cream-colored mineralization, along with traces of its long period spent at sea, give the piece a unique character.
During the Pleistocene, a large part of the present-day North Sea was dry land and formed part of the vast habitat of the woolly mammoth.
